Australia continues to witness eCommerce boom! Online Sales to hit $10bn in 2015

The once a shy industry, Australian eCommerce market, is, surprisingly, looking promising for the year 2015 if the latest estimates by eMarketer is to be believed. Australian Retail eCommerce Sales will cross the $10 Billion mark in 2015. The growth accounts for the 0.5% increase in eCommerce share of retail sales in Australia, YoY.

The estimates also suggest if the present growth trends continue till 2017, retail eCommerce will approach 15 billion mark, accounting for 5.6% of total retail sales in the country.

“Although Australian eCommerce still lags to most of the Asia Pacific, Europe, and the USA, thanks to high internet penetration that is second highest in the world, no doubts if we far exceed 2017 estimations provided the growth threshold continues”, says Jack B, Director at InteSols.

“The high net income, in comparison to Asia Pacific and some parts of Europe, will not only contribute to higher sales but also higher margin per sales. Something, as evident from recent Alibaba’s Singles’ Day sale in China, Asia Pacific is still struggling to achieve, where a huge rise in sales without the same level of rise in the revenue is a common concern”, he further added.

When it comes in eCommerce crowd in Australia, the country has packed competition at international front with eCommerce leaders like eBay and offers a great potential for both domestic and other international eCommerce players in the country.

In many countries, homegrown eCommerce firms have actually started this online trend with international player only joining later. Before, Alibaba and Amazon, both home grown online business in China, and the US respectively, the eCommerce Industry were next to none in their respective country; the rest is history.

Australia too needs such eCommerce firms to trigger such growth and to tap the country’s full potential in online retail.
